The Cottage Epilepsy Center at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital has earned the Level 3 accreditation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). A Level 3 epilepsy center is recognized as having the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level of medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

Epilepsy, a condition characterized by recurrent seizure activity, is the fourth most common neurological condition in the United States. Some two million adults in the nation, or about 1 percent of the adult population, have epilepsy. Treatments involve medication and surgical options in addition to an appropriate diagnosis by expert clinicians.

The only center of its kind on the Central Coast, the Cottage Epilepsy Center offers the highest level of care between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Cottage follows best practices for comprehensive treatment centers, with the center managed by an epileptologist, a neurologist who is formally trained at an epilepsy fellowship program.

The Cottage care team also includes a neurosurgeon, neuropsychologist, nurse practitioner, and neuroscience nurses who specialize in the care of epilepsy patients.

NAEC is a nonprofit association with a membership of more than 260 specialized epilepsy centers in the U.S.
