One morning, toward the end of my 6th grade year, my two younger sisters found me unconscious on the bathroom floor.

I do not remember anything up until waking up surround by my family and two EMT’s.

After regaining consciousness I was brought to a nearby hospital where I underwent several test. Days later I meant with a neurologist, and I was introduced to a diagnosis of generalized epilepsy.

I came to learn my seizures could be readily controlled by prescription medications, and it wasn’t until three years later I suffered from two more grand mal seizure. This called for a visit to my neurologist, which resulted in an increase dosage of my medications. Fortunately, this did the trick, and once again my seizures were under control.

The right treatment allowed me to take part in my favorite everyday activities, such as basketball. After playing four years at Grandville High School, I was recruited to continue my career at Aquinas College. Here I was teamed up with another player, Allison, living with epilepsy. Allison and I are both fortunate enough to have our epilepsy controlled by medication, but we understand this isn’t always the case, as there is no cure. It is our hope to help raise awareness and money for research with the help of our team and community.
