Topamax Side Effects in Women

Topamax is the brand name of the drug called topiramate. This drug is being used in the treatment of epilepsy and migraine. Being an anticonvulsant, topamax is also used in the treatment of some other conditions, like, Lennux-Gastuant syndrome. Topamax can effectively control and prevent seizures in epileptic patients. In case of people with migraine, topamax is used for preventing migraine headaches. As it is not so effective in reducing migraine headaches, this drug is used to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. Topamax is available as a prescription medicine, in the form of tablets and capsules. It must be taken as per the instructions of the doctor. Users of topamax must also be aware of the possible side effects of this drug. Topamax side effects are almost similar in men and women. But, some of them are experienced by women only. This article deals with topamax side effects in women.

Side Effects of Topamax in Women

As mentioned above, topamax may cause some side effects in both men and women. Some of the possible topamax side effects include unusual tiredness, dizziness, nervousness, nausea, burning or pricking sensation in the body, etc. Some of the users may experience vision problems, like uncontrolled movements of the eye, pain and redness in the eyes, double vision, blurred vision, etc. It has also been observed that the patients using topamax tend to be having trouble in concentrating and experience memory problems too. In some cases, patients experience pain in different parts of the body, like, chest, legs, back, stomach, bones, etc.

Weight loss is also said to be caused by this drug, but, it should not be used for losing weight. Some patients develop irritability and suicidal tendency, while using topamax. Depression is another side effect of this drug. Rarely, this drug may also cause side effects like, respiratory infections. It is said that long term use of topamax can cause kidney stones too. Another drug called gabapentin, which is also used for treating seizures, is said to cause side effects. But, side effects of gabapentin are uncommon.

The above said are some of the topamax side effects in women as well as men. However, there are some topamax side effects that are exclusive for women. This includes changes in the menstrual cycle and increased menstrual pain. This drug may interact with birth control pills and make the latter ineffective. However, the most worrisome topamax side effect in women is congenital malformations. Intake of topamax during pregnancy may result in birth defects. So, those who are pregnant or with plans to get pregnant must avoid use of this drug. Another side effect of topamax in women is breast pain.

Now, you have a basic understanding about topamax side effects in women. This drug cannot be used during pregnancy and it is also not advisable for women who plan to get pregnant. Even nursing mothers must discuss about the safety of this drug, before taking it. Another important factor regarding topamax is its dosage. It should not be taken without the prescription of a doctor and sticking to the prescribed dose is also equally important. Overdose can pose severe consequences. In most cases, small doses of topamax are prescribed for patients. In case, you develop side effects, contact your doctor immediately. So, always gain a basic idea about topamax side effects in women as well as men, before using the drug.

  1. Chuck,
Thank you for the article. Interesting on the breast pain, makes sense now. The excessive sweating I have not heard of, in fact I, being on topamax for years now at 600mg a day, experience decreased sweating as do others I know on the medicine. Also being cold all the time. The tingling in the hands and feet is horrible, but after a while on the medicine it is not as often. I would say the worst side effect is memory loss, lack of concentration and word fishing. Of course as with all epileptics we decide what outweighs the other…

    • Laurel Ann,
I’m pleased to read that someone else suffers from being cold all the time too, and it’s not just me. Not that I would ever wish this on anyone else, however it is comforting to know I am not alone.
Have you found changing the dose, or an alternative medicine combats this? It drives me crazy!

      Thanks
      Jes

    • I have been on 50 mg topiramate for migraine a day for about 8 months and have put down feeling cold to the miserable winter we have had. However now spring has arrived I am still cold! I’ve never felt this cold before!

    • I found that most of the annoying side effects like the pins and needles in the extreme ties had stopped after the first 2 months. I do find that I’m cold a lot but that’s only when I’m awake Or just about to fall asleep. However when I’m actually sleeping I wake up soaking wet with sweat and have to change pajamas and even bedding sometimes several times a night which is very annoying, and don’t know why this happens only when sleeping. The loss of desire for carbonated drinks never went away but soda isn’t good for my diet or health so that’s not a bug deal. I know your post was a lo g time ago and wondering if you’re still taking it and at such a high dose, I can’t imagine taking more than my 100mg/day as I am scared of withdrawl and I can literally feel it when I haven’t taken the meds within the hour or two that I’m supposed to for my next dose which really bothers me and us causing anxiety of dependency.

    • Like Tracy, I realize this post is old but I’ve been wondering about Topiramate contributing to being cold all the time and it’s nice to know I’m not crazy. I’ve always been a “freeze baby” but since starting on 50mg/day 5 months ago, I feel like the ice princess. Initially I had the numbness in my toes but that went away after about 6 weeks. I haven’t experienced any other side effects, at least not that I’m aware of yet. I fought for a long time not to be put on a preventative migraine medication. Unfortunately, my migraines are far too frequent, I’m allergic to Triptans and we exhausted all other plausible options.

Has anyone found anything to help or counteract being cold all the time? It was 65 degrees out today, I had my heat blasted in my car and ran a space heater all day at work. You might as well just call me Elsa. You know, from ‘Frozen’ 🙂

    • My husband is on topiamax for seizures and keepra .and my husband stays Cold all the time. And he has lost so much weight. He says he can never get warm.

    • Hello my name is Kelsey I’ll be 21 in July I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy and I just got my license back yesterday, I am so excited. Just thought I would share that 🙂 I have been on this drug since I was released from the hospital and I just want to know, if I am not having any seizures at 150 mg why does my dr want to up my dose? And is there a walk or something that I can be a part of bc I feel like I am all alone. I had so many friends before and when I got diagnosed with epilepsy they all stopped talking to me. So it would be nice to be a part of something like this so I know that I am not alone. 🙂 I love seeing all the support on this site it’s awesome!!

      Hi Kelsey,

Thanks for your question on EpilepsyU.com

Some doctors what a medication at a predetermined “therapeutic level” while others may ignore it if your seizures are controlled below it or even above it if you are not having seizures or are not toxic.

      Chuck Carmen, Founder EpilepsyU.com

On event and walk I will look at your profile to see where you are and connect you.

    • They were never your friends Kelsey. I have one good friend that has been there when I had my horrible migraines Sharon

    Hi Chuck,
    Thank you for the article.
I am on Topamax, have been for almost 2 years, it works well for my seizures. I have 2 issues, one is not too bothersome, I can’t do simple math in my head anymore. The other is bothersome, I have had a ph change in my body since I started Topamax, and started having oral and vaginal yeast infections, and have been on weekly fluconazole for almost a year now. The oral thrush caused my teeth to start to rot at the gum line. This all started after a couple of months on the Topamax. I can’t take other seizure meds had a Stephen Johnson Reaction to Tegretol years ago.

      Pamela,
We are not physician but based on our research of this Topamax had been used for vulvodynia pain. We don’t think they are connected but would always suggest you ask your physican.

    • I just was put on topamax for my epilepsy and I immediately broke out in a vaginal yeast infection and the drs are not believing me that it is related to the topamax. I am sorry you have suffered that too. Did you ever get it under control?
      Thanks
      Emily

    • I am so relieved to see you ladies say this, I have had recurrent and pernicious yeast infections since starting topamax a few months ago. I got my first one within a week of starting topamax, before this I had never had one before in my life. I wondered about it at the time but wrote it off as coincidence. Since that time I have had several and am now convinced of the connection between the medication and the infections. In addition, the infections seem to also be becoming more and more difficult to treat.

    • Hi Pamela, I k ow this is a really old post but maybe it would help me out with my issues. I like the fact that this article helps with female only issues and I know that females respond differently than males do to medication and I feel as though I have some embarrassing side effects from the medications that I would like to know if others are suffering from as well. I have also had non stop yeast infections, I also have increased urinary incontinence especially at night and I’m only 35 years years old, accompanying this issues it’s also been like really pungent and smelly cloudy urine that almost makes me gag. ! Especially at night time I overly sweat in between my legs and the odor is truly embarrassing that at no point can I roll out of bad to even just change clothes and go about my day, I literally must shower and it’s not even more than a few hours into the day before the odor starts again and that never happened prior to the medication and I’m married and have been to the dr and do not have any STD ect to explain this embarrassing situation bUT on the other hand I don’t know if I’ve just been so hyper vigilant to the problem to the extant that maybe only I smell it but I really really have a feeling that everyone else can to bc it’s not just there it’s literally the odor left on my clothes, undergarments and pants…not only that but I have cloudy smelly pee that makes me not sleep through the night and really hurts and burns. So you have been put on on a like a weekly Diflucan? How has that worked out for you and your womanly problem issues bc topamax has really really help my other problems that it would be a shame to stop using it bc I couldn’t get those other really embarrassing problem under control. Has anyone else had any of these issues I mentioned, how have they coped as a woman , and does it get any better like the other side effects that dissappeared over time???

    • Hi Tracy,

I read your post and I’m so happy to see I’m not the only one going through this. I haven’t had it as bad/everything you’re describing but similar. I have really cloudy pee and the frequency of my trips to the washroom have increased significantly. The main reason I looked on the web was that odour you’re talking about!! I cannot stand it, it makes me so uncomfortable and super self-conscious! I feel like that’s all I can smell as the day goes on which, like you said, leads me to believe (in my own not so paranoid way) that others can too. It’s on my underwear and pants. All my other side effects have come and gone. I’ve also started gaining back the 15lbs I lost :S which is a good thing because I couldn’t afford to loose it in the first place. I really like the medication and it’s the only one that’s worked so far but I’m starting to think this odour might be a deal breaker … It’s starting to affect my sex life with my fiancé too because I’m embarrassed.

I found your article very informative. Thank you. I have been on Topamax for about 6 years now for seizures. I initially lost 30 lbs when beginning the medication and have stayed at that weight ever since. The tingling of the feet and hands that I had in the beginning is a rare event now ( Thank goodness!) it drove me crazy! It was the worst at night. I havn’t contributed the abdominal pain that has no cause and other misc pains I have to the medication until reading your article! What a relief to give it an answer. I have recently in the last month or two started with mouth sores and thrush type issues. This medication has always worked well for my type of seizures. It is so hard to decide between the side effects and the medications…. Thanks for the information.

  7. i have been on topamax for over a year for bipolar disorder but went up to 200mg a day in october and it has been working really well for me when other medications have not. the only problem is that i was just diagnosed with vulvodynia after so many test coming back negative. i am afraid it is because of the topamax and i will have to find another drug. i have the pins and needles in my hands but i can live with that to be healthy but the vulvodynia is awful and sometimes feels like the numbness and pins and needles in my hands. could the two be related?

  8. Good day

I have just been prescribed Topamax for short period (roughly ten days a month) to counteract hormonal migraines that i have suffered around my menstrual cycle since was 15. I am now 27. I am so far on a lower dosage but have noticed when i accidentally took a higher dose that my vision was blurry and I would get dizzy spells. My question however is regarding the pregnancy abnormalities. My husband and I are not currently trying for a baby and I am on the pill but would my taking Topmax now affect the chances in future that my child would be affected? Is there a window I should be concerned with between stopping Topamax and trying for a baby? I am very concerned about this and would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you so much.

  9. Hello, Have been on 5mg Topomax for tremors for about 2 months. Tremors are almost gone except for right arm that once in a while will have one not everyday. I can live with that. My problem is I have been having problems urinating. Can’t seem to get started and usually takes several tries. Is this a side effect? I drink lots of water?

Jan, Sorry for the delay in my reply. Since I had not heard of this before I did a little research and found yes it can be a side effect on rare occasion. It is a low rated one but I would still discuss this with your physician.

    • I have always had really thick hair but since I have been on topamax my hair has become noticeably thinner. My face has broken out and I never had acne, my periods are longer, can’t find the right words, feel a bit “dim”, tingling in hands and feet and oh so cold all the time. And still migraines cause me problems every other day almost. Maybe it’s time to go off it and take my chances!

  12. I’ve been on Topamax since Feb. I’ve lost 25lbs since. It has controlled my seizures since I’ve started. I’m going on my second and second in my life yeast infection since started. I see it’s just not me. It is a side effect? I’ve noticed being cold all of the time. I can handle the cold, pins and needles, dry mouth, and your typical topamax side effects. I hope the infections aren’t a regular thing

Jen : I have read others losing their hair. You can take vitamins to help.

  14. I was on Topamax for 6 weeks in March & April 2013 for seizures. I asked to be taken off the drug because of the side effects. The most disturbing were the speech, memory, confusion and blurred vision. I’ve been off it for a month and although the first three are dissipating, the vision has not cleared. I plan to see an ophthalmologist and I pray that this will not be a permanent condition. The seizures are minor in comparison.

    • How Cynthia, yes I am having the same issue, very strong awful smelling, cloudy urine problems that is so strong that I’m embarrassed that the next person to use the bathroom can smell it. Also lots of night time groin sweating, painful urination, frequency of urination and painful sex. Never had these embarrassing problems prior. I almost always wake to nightmares of needing to pee just in time to get to the bathroom just to have it sting so bad. Went to dr and nothing seems to be wrong except that it’s just a side effect and wondering if the smell is that I’m having some urinary incontinence as well especially at night but it’s really making me ridiculously self concious and causing issues with my sex life bc I’m scared there’s a smell or that I will leak a little smelly urine ect. Glad I’m not the only one worried about urine odor.

She is on 500 mg a day she cannot go higher due to side effects but if it were not for Topamax she would have seizures every day. She does have some side effects but they are not as servere as they are from other drugs. I am grateful for the drug and hope that others can get relief by using this drug as my daughter has. Cheryl

Tessa, A side effect for Topamax is usualy weight loss not gain. Tegretol and Loprazolam do not show weight gain as a side effect. They all can have fatigue and that may be effecting you. Do you see your energy levels down? You may want to be more active if you can and also mention this to your doctor to be sure you do not have anything medical going on like thyroid issues or something else. Depakote and some other popular anti-seizure medications can cause weight gain.

    • Hi Chuck,
I’ve been taking Topamax for 6 years as a preventive for my migraines and also to help with my knee pain because I have had 7 right knee surgeries. It has worked wonderfully for my migraines. Although my knee pain has been a different story. Pain Management has been increasing my Topamax to help with the burning sensation in my knee, In the past 6 mths we’ve had to increase it and decrease it because of the side effects got bad. I was at 300mg but had to drop to 200 my because it caused my tongue to swell. Within the 6 mths I’ve been suffering with genital sores/lesions. I know that Topamax can cause kidney stones if you don’t drink enough water, I found out the hard way lol. But with the increasing and decreasing over the 6 months, and this going on for about that time, can this be what’s causing them? Also suffering the tingling down the legs, does it also cause restless leg syndrome? I’ve been suffering with restless leg syndrome for about a year now. Please help! <3

    • Profile photo of EpilepsyU

      Hi Saundra,

I don’t think the Topamax is causing that issue for you but I would ask your doctor about it. I have heard about the leg tinglings from from others. Have your doctors tried Neurontin for your knee pain and/or Migraines? That is another medication that has been used a lot for neuropathic pain issues.

Best wishes and good luck. I know about the knee issues myself. It isn’t fun is it?

      Chuck

    • Hi Chuck,
Yea, I’ve tried Gabapentin, Lyrica, Diclofenec, and others I can’t remember, lol. I injured my knee back in 2006 at a water park when I was 4 mths pregnant. I tore the ACL and dislocated my knee. I had a doctor who performed 5 of the surgeries and he only made my knee worse. Surgery 5 he took my kneecap out and forgot to reattach my quadricep muscle. It took 8mths to find a new doctor who would actually take me. No one wanted to fix the damage of what this doctor did. The doctor I have is one of the best in Scottsdale, AZ. The first surgery he did was only suppose to take 30 mins, it took 4 hrs. There was so much infection in my knee, he had to reattach what was left of my quadricep muscle. My last surgery he did he did a Allograft and full knee replacement. My leg was immobilized for 8 mths. That was in 2009, I can only bend my knee 40 degrees now. Because of the first doctor I’m 80% disabled. And there is nothing else that can done for my knee except to live with the pain, fuse it, or amputate it. It’s pretty much fused so I chose to live with it. But trying to find the right medication without the bad side effects has been a change. The Allograft is what kills me because that’s where the dug a 4 inch trench on my leg bone underneath my knee, and put donor bone with 3 wires so it could mesh together. But it still gives me a lot of burning pain that goes down the leg. That’s what we’re having a hard time finding the right meds for.

  20. Profile photo of EpilepsyU

Wow Saundra, you have gone through a lot on that knee. I had 4 surgeries on my right leg and it has taken 3 years for that burning pain to finally go away and I don’t swell as bad when standing on it. All the nerve damage from the surgeries can cause the neuropathic pain. I am sorry that the meds didn’t help. They didn’t me either until one day I realized it stopped. I do hope yours gets better for you soon.

  23. I take Topamax now 100mg twice a day for migraines and know of the side effects. The side effects I have or had are the pricking sensations in the body but it stopped after a while. I no longer have them since I got used to the meds. And the migraines are gone. I no longer have to go to the ER for them. I sometimes have the uncontrolled movement of the eyes but rarely. And I used to have the sore throat but it wasn’t for long. I am having aches in my leg and my foot but I think that is where I sprained it a year ago but I’m not sure. Even with the side effects I’m glad I’m taking it because I used to go to the ER once a month or DR’s almost twice a month because of my migraines they were that bad. I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat, nothing. And as a single mom I had to keep going even with a migraine. I won’t go any higher on the meds because I don’t need to and if I need to I will get off them in the future.

  26. I just started Topiramate, the generic one month ago today. 50 mg. in the evening only for pain management. Bulging disk That presses on a nerve, had this for 2 yrs. now. This is my only hope before surgery. I had 2 transdermal steriod injections, they didn’t touch the pain!! I have done the physical therapy and will continue to do it from here on end most likely. Today I was upped on my Topiramate to 50 mg/ 2 times in the evening. I am concerned because on this low dose I’m sooooo sleepy all day. My eyes are watery and I wake up in the evening probably 6 times, so it’s broken sleep. And I take 2 Tylenol pm and a clonzepam besides and still wake up. I’m trying to stick it through, hopefully the side effects of being sleepy all day will wear off????

    • I’m still hanging in there, but I am sooo sleeeeeeeeepy tell me people, anyone, does this sleepy effect go away? Is there anything you out there in blog world do for this side effect, drink, caffieine, those little shots of something I see in the stores, 5 hour? Some of you are on much higher doses than 100mg. a day. Will this pass? Other wise, I want to try and stick this out.

    • Hi Cheryl, I just came across this blog. I started topamax at 50 mg at night for 2 weeks and then increased to 100mg. At first I was so tired and sleepy I almost couldn’t function. But eventually, it goes away and you will be fine. Ironically enough, now I am getting some insomnia and some restlessness, almost like I have TOO much energy. I have had a little bit if almost every side effect this pill can give you but luckily, everything just kind of comes and goes. The only lasting effect if the weight loss, which of course, is a bonus! I’m not even overweight and I have lost about 8 pounds in 6 weeks without changing eating habits or working out (even though I hardly ate at all the first 3 weeks as the topamax made me extremely nauseous). Good luck!

    • Dear Jen, yes you’re right most of the symptoms go away, thank Goodness for that. But we don’t want the suppressed appetite to go away. I don’t need it to go away. I need to lose 20 and I would look great. I never had a problem with weight until menopause. I was always nice and lean.
I am on 200 ml. I will not go on any higher. Because when ever any stress rolls around, I find myself a tad depressed and cry more than usual. I don’t like that. I want to be in control. Because its a tough world out there and there is always someone out there that that would love to bring you down. If you know what I mean, when your dealing with women. Men are pretty straight forward creatures, but women are sneaky and rattle like snake. Ha ha. Just trying to warn you Topamax as you get higher dose make you a little more depressed if your prone to it . Other wise it’s an ok drug, if your patient and can deal with the side effects in the beginning, they fade after the 4 th mo. I wish you luck. I’m on it for nerve pain in my spine, it’s helped.

  27. I’ve been taking topamax for about 4 months now. Ever since I’ve had nothing but urinary&yeast infections and bv that is hard to get rid of. …. doctors tell me the drug can’t be the reason. …I beg to differ because I had no problems prior. ….I think it’s due to the fact that it may be affecting the PH in my body. … what should I think at this point? Am I right?

    • Ginny Lynn wow so sorry about the yeast and urinary tract problems!!! That’s a shame. Can you maybe drink tons of cranberry juice and water all day to correct the problem along with 2 Greek yogurts a day? I would try anything first. Sterile famine wipes? What are you on Topamax for? Well any way I wish you best of luck. Cheryl Marie

    • Ginny Lynn,
I’ve been on Topamax for 3 years, and I recently stopped taking it 3 mths ago. I can tell you from my experience of being on it, I had the same problem, I had yeast infection so much. I also wasn’t able to drink any kind of soda pop either. It changed the taste of soda. Since I’ve been off, I’ve had no more yeast infections, and I’m able to drink soda again. Topamax can cause a taste change in Carbonated drinks. A lot of people I’ve talked to that has been on Topamax has also had the same problem with yeast infections. Topamax can also cause Kidney Stones if you don’t drink a lot of water. That was told to me by Walgreens Pharmacy because I was getting kidney stones every 6 mths. I hope this information was helpful! Good luck, but make sure to drink a lot of water.

    • What are the side effects of getting off Topomax? I have been on 5 yrs plus 50mg am and pm for migraines. It works beautifully. But, in past two years I have had repeated kidney stones , huge ones and had to have kidney blastings to remove them each time. My doctor said that its sad that the Topomax side effects are causing this because my migraines were severe and the medicine truly changed my life. I want to try 25mg am/pm first?? But don’t want these surgical treatments to the hospital every six months! Especially since last time they made a mistake and were mistakenly taking to the OR for BACK SURGERY! At a very accredited hospital too! **** happens, and if you are in the hospital enough I guess you can be a number for it!! I have had the leg sweats but none of the other things so many have written about luckily, but not much said about kidney stones, but first years no problems, so I am suspecting long term use maybe?? Taking meds is great but in the long run they all have a price to pay I am afraid. Plus the interactions of just vitamins can cause problems even with correct amts etc.
We are all out there trying but again its tough staying and being healthy.

      Dottie

    • The doctors and all the websites say its not connected but most blogs are filled with women complaining if this side effects and I myself am one of them. Maybe one day they will listen to us since we are the women taking the medication and experiencing the side effects. We aren’t wrong we just have to find a way to counteract the side effect. I plan on speaking to my pharmacist on whether greek yogurt and whether a cranberry supplement will work and go from there. Good luck finding what works for you.

    • GINNY you are not alone since starting topamax feminine side effects have been like the black plague almost debilitating. Affecting my marriage and self esteem. I ding want to stop the medication going to see the dr to see if I can be put on a constant Diflucan or anything to remedy this but once summer comes along and the sweating gets worse ect I may have to stop. Have you found any remedy?

    • Ginny, I had the same problem with Topamax! Doctors told me the same thing, that Topamax was not the cause of all the yeast infections. I was on Topamax for 2 years and I was having yeast infections every month! So I quit taking it, and guess what? No more yeast infections!! So yes, Topamax caused all the yeast infections and I also found out that it also causes kidney stones and that you have to drink tons of water while your on it. The pharmacist at Fred Meyers is the one who told me about the kidney stones since I was having them every six months! Since I’ve been off it, no more kidney stones! Ifor I was you I would talk to your doctor, and get something else, because the yeast infections are worst than an average yeast infection when not it. I hope this info helps you and others who are taking Topamax. Don’t let doctors tell you that the Topamax isn’t the cause of it, because it is the cause.

  28. I’ve been on Topamax for 9 yrs almost 10 now. I developed massive kidney stones and had to have emergency surgery, my periods have become so massive and painful Im out of commission for 1-2 days bcuz of pain let alone blood loss, vision has dropped to blurry, can’t form full thoughts most of the time or say the words Im wanting to, RLS, I have constant body pain, I fell and it caused frozen shoulder in 5 days. I had gone up to 200mg and headaches were pretty much under control but side effects were too much, so we reduced to 100mg. Effects still scared me so tried to slowly come off. I bleed for 31 days straight. So had to start back up and at 100mg. So tired, effects are all back +. I feel almost paranoid all the time and afraid. Sweating, hot flashes, and then stay cold and freezing. Its literally going to cost me my marriage and I dont know what to do. Drs just dont understand and say its not the Med its my age. Im 40 now. Its not, a person can tell. PLEZ HELP ME! Weve tried many meds and this is the only thing that helps the headaches but its going to kill me and leave me all alone. What can I do?

  30. I’m taking topamax for epilepsy and was just given a script for Visanne will this new med counter react the topamax because it’s a hormonal pill and cause the seizures to come back? I don’t want to take the new med if it will cause the seizures again as I need my license back. So any advise would be a big help.

And how long after you have started the topamax should the side effects start going away? The tingling in the hands and feet are so bad it brings me to tears it hurts that bad and it’s starting to move down the leg to the knees.

  31. Hi,
Guys I’ve been on Topamax for over four years now and have experienced the tingling sensation which eventually goes away over time. Every once in awhile I still get it. Also, my memory is horrible now, but that goes hand and hand with seizure medicine. So if it prevents me from having them then I can deal with it. I find reading helps. Also, in regards to the pregnancy question being on seizure medication for a long duration may increase your chances of having miscarriages and not being able to conceive. I have been on seizure medication since I was able to swallow and will be for the rest of my life. I was happy to read that others of been having issues with yeast infections, I thought it was just me and I’ve never had an issue with them before. I think it’s time for me to switch medication.

? was offered this medication because i suffer from migraines but was told this could cause birth control to be less effective .. i want children but not yet lol has anyone had any issues with this??

    • Amanda, I suffer migraines too. I found out the Nortriptyline
works great for migraines as a preventive! I’m not sure about birth defects, but I do know that Topamax causes yeast infections and kidney stones, with Nortriptyline
I had no side effects what so ever! Hope this helps

  33. I’ve been on Lamictal for 6yrs and My Doc has just added Topamax to the list for epilepsy.
I’m terrified of side effects, my memory is already dreadful. I feel that I have 2 left feet and my hair loss has been bad for the past yr.
I’ve only been on Topamax for 2 weeks and already have tingling in my toes, watery eyes and thrush!!!
I’ve never in my 38yrs had thrush.
I know this helps people with migraines but I have had one for 2 days now and my go to pain killers aren’t working.
Is this going to get better?
I’m due to up my dose from 50mg to 100mg in a few days and i don’t want to

  36. Hi All. I am so glad to have found this website. I was put on Topomax about three months ago for nerve pain in my neck, due to surgeries, and migraines.
I started out cutting my 50mg pills in quarters. No problems, until I got therapeutic on 50mg once a day. Then the mouth sores, thrush feelings, urination problems, all started. The mouth sores got so bad, I could hardly eat. Good news is I lost 20lbs in 6 weeks. It also helped my depression issues, not one migraine on it, and I am back on dilauded for the pain, which was all but gone. I am going to start Monday again on the quarter pill and see if I can’t try it again. Has anyone went back on it and had better results? Thank you

    • Hi Robin R. I am not a fan of topirmate. I stuck through it though, hoping to find relief from my nerve pain. I have a pinched nerve caused by a buiging disk in my lower back. It never did work on the pain, I am sorry to say. And the side effects were getting to be too much. But I was desparate!!! I think I got up to 150 mg. & still no relief . I only lost maybe 4 lbs. in the 6 mo. I was slowly got up to the 150 mg. I was and my Dr. were very careful going up on it. I do remember it giving a tranquilizing effect, but when you hit the high milagrams it makes you more aggravated …or depressed. I had the tingling in the hands. My hot flashes disappeared, I was even cold at times!!! I broke out with little pimples in my scalp early on the drug. I couldn’t sleep soundly on it. The worst was the loss for words when your speaking….hence the word DOPRIMATE!!!!!!!!i Then I kind of hit rock bottom of just feeling a little more depressed & I grew tiered of it just not working on the pain from that pinched nerve, the depressed feeling. I just told my Dr. I wanted to be done w/ it!! So I slowwwwwwwwwwwwly weaned off it minus 25mg a day. I’ve been off it for 6 mo. It cleared my system in 2 mo. I’m myself again…happy!!! I go to the gym faithfully, I stretch first on mats, then I do a few weights, I joined the Aqua Fitness class , palates class., they keep me more limber, if I can’t go…I’m in pain. I try to go 4-5 days a week!!! My advice is 1st. go to physical therapy learn the stretching exercises then join a fitness club !!! And get off toporimate, you are wasting your time on a drug that sucks!!!! Cheryl

  37. I was on topirimate for two years for chronic migraines. I am not a fan either. At first it was ok, started at 50 mg, but moved up to 200. Saw a small decrease in the headaches, and the weight loss was nice, but the side effects. My hands and feet tinged constantly, i couldn’t concentrate, was always feeling anxious. I developed recurring bacterial vaginosis. I never had that in my life before the topirimate. I was always tired. My libido went down the drain. My dr wanted to just keep increasing it, and when I told her no, she wanted to put me on antidepressants, WITH the topomax. I said no way, and have since taken myself off of it. I’ve been trying different holistic methods, massage, chiropractic, and meditation. The drug may work for some, but I didn’t have a great experience.

  38. Hello everyone,

I’m a 20 year old from South Africa, I came across this site while checking for the possible side effects of Topamax. I have been on Topalex 50mg (which is the same thing) for 10 months now, I suffer from severe migraines. The medication has definitely helped a lot, before I wouldn’t go a single day without getting a migraine & now I get a migraine maybe twice a month, if that.

But.. I have lost 10kg (I don’t know what that is in lbs, sorry!) & I now only weigh 46kg.. I’m quite underweight & I am always cold. I’m not gonna mention all the side effects I have because it has already been mentioned several times above. However, I have a sudden tightness in my chest that has never been there before & I would just like to know if anyone has experienced this while taking Topamax?

I am seriously considering stopping this medication as the problems with concentration, confusion & loss of words is getting a bit much especially as I am working & studying.

Any advice would be highly appreciated!!

  40. This has been very insightful. My wife and I were discussing her challenges and seemed to fit into the Asberghers symptoms but she had never experienced them when growing up but over the last few years has since being on Topiramate. She was on other medications before as a precautionary measure for seizures as she had a brain tumor removed 20 years ago.
We have been searching for answers as she is always cold, has stomach issues to the point she has a hard time swallowing and lately the fear of being touched as it feels like pins and needles and has lost all desires to kiss or have any sexual contact. We will be discussing with the doctor switching mess to see if that helps.
Anyone switch and reverse some of the side effects?

  41. Hey there. I have been on topamax for about 13 years. I started after my youngest was born. I wm currently taking 600mg a day. At this point i am pretty used to the side effects. I drink smoothies with natural yogurt and lots of fruits, drink as much water as possible. i try to eat as natural as i can. With that amount of poison going into my body, i avoid frozen foods, and processed foods, as much as i can. anything to heLp. My body will let me know if i have eaten wrong, and i try not to do it again….. no matter how good that twinkie tastes!!
I have stopped my meds a few times. I hate taking them. I always seem to end up in the ER. I have been in several accidents. The latest one, included 12 trees, a burning truck that i was trapped in, which i am now permanently scarred from. I almost died in the truck. I had to break my leg to get out. I will take side effects which i can learn to handle vs epilepsy and blinding migraines any day.
In my years of taking this med, i have figured out a few tricks, i am more than happy to help anyone.

  42. Hi ! I’m not sure if this will be any help but Topamax pretty much saps your body of vitamins. If you’re feeling chilly, skin breaking out, your hair is thinning, or you’re experiencing constant yeast infections. For example, lack of vitamin D is a common root cause for yeast infections. The topamax isn’t allowing your body to get the vitamins it needs.

  43. Hi, I’ve been on topiramate for a year. For the last 9 months, I’ve been smelling cigarette smoke almost non-stop. No one around me smokes. I’ve had an mri with and without contrast to see if I had any lesions or tumors. Everything came back normal. I haven’t seen any mention of this being a side effect, but it started a few months after going on this medication and it seems to be the only connection. Does anyone know of this is an actual side effect? I’m so tired of smelling cigarettes. It’s causing me to have an almost constant headache and feeling as if I’m going to come from the smell. My regular doctor and neurologist can’t figure out why I’m smelling it, so was hoping someone else had some help for me.

    • HI FAWNA…

I have had this very same side effect of Topomax…smelling cigarette smoke. It did go away eventually. I have been on this drug on and off for 20 years for migraines. I’ve been on high doses, then, I go off of it for awhile. My migraines get bad again, so then I go back on it again. I found a supplement that did help with the cigarette smoke smell. It may help you: It’s Andrew Lessman’s ProCaps Ultimate Friendly Flora Probiotic Complex. You can get it online, and have it sent to you. I took 3 caps, twice a day. I still take that much. The smell went away within about a week. Hope this helps.

  44. Hi! ive been on Topamax probably since the beginning of the year.. my hands get caught up in this nerve type thing where its hard to control them in a way? Its weird, I can move them still but my fingers will move on their own, does that make sense? and also my feet will tingle extrememly bad if I lay or sit on them…happen to anyone else? im on this medicine for my migraines, and hopefully to help with weight loss but just mainly concerned about my head right now. any advice to help with anything going on with me? Thank!!!

    • I started Topamax in February I believe. I am taking it with Diamox also for IIH and migraines. I get the same like spasm type things in my hands. It freaked me put the first time it happened. I wasn’t sure if it was from my medication or from my IIH. I also get the tingling and pins/needles in my hands and feet that are worse when it’s cold. I try to keep my feet warm and not bend my legs in a way that I know will onset the tingling but it is just something I deal with. The brain fog I am having from the topamax since going up is bothering me more than anything else.

    • I totally understand what you are talking about..The nerve endings in my toes sometimes will do that when they cramp.I have been on topiramate for almost 3 years and just about 3 months ago have had my dose raised to 100 mg. 2x a day…I have a lot of side effects from memory loss, blurry vision, tingling in my fingers on and off..And now my feet were beginning to feel numb outside in the cold so they are decreasing my dosage back again..I take the drug for Familiar tremors…

  46. I have been off and on Topamax since I was diagnosed with epilepsy 15 yrs ago. Right now I’m on 150 MG a day of it. (I was taken off for my 2 pregnancies.) I’m also on Tegretol and Lamictal for my seizures and migraines. I’m taking over 3500 MG a day to prevent my seizures and migraines. I am always freezing, experience the tingling and numbness only in my feet, have involuntary muscle twitches, occasional stomach pains, stumbling on my words all the time and have had kidney stones once. However, in my opinion my neurologist has done a great job at combining these medications and I do not have nearly as many black outs or seizures as I did in the past. I have a black spot on my brain and missing 2 chromosomes and am a candidate for brain surgery. But being so young with 2 young children he is doing everything to keep that from happening. These side effects may be annoying, but they to me are a part of my everyday life and I’ve grown to except them. I just try to ignore them and layer up on the clothing.

  47. Hi. I haven’t been on Topiramate very long, but I really like it. My seizures have been uncontrolled until starting this. I also got he VNS. So I’m not having any seizures at all now. I’m now on 5 medications, so I can’t entirely blame the Topiramate for the tiredness and poor concentration and memory loss. I take 175mg a day, I also take keppra, vimpat, zonegran, and klonopin for night seizures. However, I have lost some weight. The Topiramate has substantially reduced my appetite and has lessened my sense of taste. Also, I started losing weight without even trying. I just stepped on the scaled and before I even realized it, I had lost. It’s been a few months and I’m down over 30 pounds without trying. I have to be conscious of being sure to eat. Other than these few symptoms, I don’t experience anything else. I don’t experience the tingling and weird feelings that others do. I like this med.

  48. Another one to join the long list of downstairs female side-effects after starting Topamax. Never had a yeast infection of anything like it in my life (am 34 y/o) but about a week after starting Topamax I started to experience strongly smelling cloudy urine, need to urinate frequently, and constantly itching down below like OMG non stop. It stopped Topamax for a while, but when I started again, within a week, same side effects downstairs… .. amazing they claim there not to be a link? Anyways I’m still on it, 100mg, no appetite and dry mouth, feel like I could drink the whole atlantic ocean and still need a drink after… but worth it for how well it works in other ways.

    • Hi Everyone, I’ve read all the comments but no ne mentioned what I’ve experiened. I was put on 25mg of a Topamax exactly 4 weeks ago for facial nerve pain and migraines. My Dr. Increased my dose to 50mgs 7 days ago and by day 5, I was slurring my words, felt drugged, was dizzy, and agitated. I’m back down to 25 the past 2 days and already feel better. Here’s my question, did it make anyone one else lose the desire to smoke cigarettes? I’ve been 1/2 a pack smoker for 37 years and since the 1st week on a Topamax not only have I started losing weight, but I’ve also lost the taste for cigarettes, they started to disgust me. I’ve tried to quit for years and failed but in less then a month on Tompax, I’ve quit smoking and lost weight.

  50. Hi all, surprise a man asking a question amongst all you lovely Ladies.
Hey Chuck, I’ve been on Topiramate 200mg daily for around 8 years I think.
I also have a rare condition called Ehlers-Danlos Danlos Syndrome, very life limiting and mobility limiting. I take plenty of other tablets for this, Morphine, Pregabalin, and about 6 others morning and eventing. However the Topiramate is the only one I have taken over roughly the period covering the particular complaint I’m going to mention. Sorry but the build up mattered.
My skin, due to my EDS, is very stretchy and my joints very lax with shoulders, hips, knees dislocating often.
It seems though that over the last 7-8 years the base layer and top layers of my skin have separated in several places. At surgery points where I was stitched normally and should have been EDS stitched which involves more and deeper.
I’ve had several head injuries and skin tears and the base layer has slipped down either side and down the back and I’m constantly pushing it back 24/7. Also the layers split around my pubic area where I had major surgery and the layer falls down either side of my penis quite literallyinto my anus and blokes Mr up so I cannot go to the toilet. I then spend days trying to move this very painful below the surface layer back to the front again. Of course bits go where they shouldn’t over time and now sone of the layer has gone down my shaft and is proving very difficult to move. It is as if I am deseaming. All over. Unfortunately it also spreads the mucus and subquetaneous mush around which seeps out west it can and in particular into my mouth through my many bite holes.

Has any one come across this, is it related to Topiramate as I’ve no other drug taken over the period wholey.

  51. I know these posts are old, but I found them because I am on 50mg topamax for hemiplegic migraines. After being in the ER with what they thought was a stroke in my 30s I welcomed the diagnosis of this strange migraine. I am already a low weight athletic female, so weight loss isn’t a need. I found this because I am having my first cycle on this drug and I am normally a two day period kind of girl, no cramps, no big deal. I have felt like I am in stage two labor and I have ruined clothes as break thru bleeding has occurred. I am confident my body will get used to this medicine and be okay going forward but wow! Oh I too cannot enjoy the taste of soda now, its so strange! Tingling is strange at times but its getting better. I have always been cold natured so that doesn’t feel different to me. Those dealing with yeast, I haven’t had that but I also take probiotics daily just because I had a history of colitis as a youth. I have been headache free and I just drove 3000 miles by myself with my black lab/chow mix in ice and snow! So far this med is a winner.

  52. So glad I found this. I’ve been on Topomax for 3 years now for pain management for my back and I only take 100 mg total daily but the other than word fishing and weight loss, I find the fact that I am always cold, always. If it is 100 degrees outside, then I’m happy. I can’t stand a breeze on my skin at all. This past winter has been horrible for me. I’m on such a low dose and I wonder is there is naught they can do to counter this. My hands and feet are always freezing to the touch. Now that I see it is related to the topomax, I will relate this to my pain management physician.

  53. Hi guys I just found this page and glad I did, I have experienced most of these symptoms but not all. I was one 250mg of Topamax, but have recently started to lower my dose. Lately my vision has been slightly blurry, numbness and tingling in my hands but the side effect I have had the longest has been the acne. I have never suffered from acne in my life, and the past few months my entire face has broken out, my face is so sore I can barely touch it-talk about causing depression. I have seen a couple comments on here of people experiencing acne, has there been any more people that have had this happen? Did it go away if you did stop taking the drug?
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

I took a test and it was negative however, I’m currently waiting to go get a check up because something is moving inside of me when I sit and lay down I feel it more. I haven’t missed a cycle but they haven’t been regular since I started taking topamax. I just want some insight cause to make sure I’m not loosing my mind.

  55. This is my second time being on topamax. The first time I stopped taking it because I had severe swelling in my feet & I couldn’t even walk or wear shoes. The doctor swore on his life that it didn’t come from the medicine tho, so when my migraines returned from my car wreck in December of 2016 he put me back on a higher dosage. Now I constantly have tingling in my hands and feet & I had memory loss already from the concussion I sustained in the accident, but I have it even worse from this medicine ! I also have had a yeast infection & bv for the past 3 weeks or more ! This is really stressing me out. The doctor put me on some muscle relaxers to help my trigger point which is my neck, for my headaches so I’m gonna stop the topamax for a while to see if this clears up.

  56. I have been on Topamax for a year for migraine prevention. I have not had any migraines at all since starting this medication. I have read about the urinary side effects and I have experienced the cloudy urine problem. I really hope this does not develop into kidney stones because this has been the longest time in 41 years I have been migraine free. I would really hate to stop this medication.
