Cannabidiol May Reduce Seizures by Half in Hard-to-treat Epilepsy

Promising results from a large-scale, controlled, Phase 3 clinical study of epilepsy patients being treated with cannabidiol will be presented next week at the American Academy of Neurology’s Annual Meeting in Boston on April 25. GW Pharmaceuticals’ liquid oral formulation of cannabidiol (CBD), called Epidiolex, is one of 500 compounds found in cannabis. Unlike the well-known compound, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not produce a “high” as the psychoactive component is absent. Results from the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that almost 40 percent of people with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) had at least a 50 percent reduction in drop seizures, compared to 15 percent taking a placebo. LGS is a severe form of epilepsy that often results in impaired intellectua...

University of Iowa is Also Testing CBD for Epilepsy

U-I studying canabis oil ingredient as a treatment for epilepsy A clinical study of a marijuana derivative for treating epilepsy will soon get underway at the University of Iowa and other research sites. U-I Neurologist, Charuta Joshi, says the study will use an ingredient in cannabis oil called CDB that’s created by a British pharmaceutical company. They want to see if it helps reduce seizures in some patients. “They have cloned their plants genetically. It is medication that you get. It is pure CBD that they are making. The study is going to be extremely rigorous.” Joshi says there is anecdotal evidence that cannabis oil has helped patients with untreatable seizure disorders.

The Case For Whole Plant Legislation – Is CBD Alone Good Enough?

In recent months, one strain of cannabis has been talked about, and legalized more than any other; Charlotte’s Web, a strain of Marijuana bred by Realm of Caring, a group of growers and dispensary owners in Colorado, for its high CBD content. CBD is the least controversial Cannabinoid found in the plant, and there are hundreds, if not thousands of stories to support that it can help reduce seizures. An effect of this new media, legislative and social media blitz of coverage on CBD is that people now seem to think that Charlotte’s Web is the only viable source of CBD, and that CBD alone is effective in seizure control, this is leading parents from across the nation to move to Colorado for access to Charlotte’s web specifically, because they believe that is the only legal w...

Cannabis Classroom: The Role Of Cannabis In Epilepsy And Seizure Disorders

What Is Epilepsy?: Seizures vs. Epilepsy The medical definition of seizure is a clinical expression of abnormal, excessive, synchronous discharge of neurons residing primarily in the brain’s cerebral cortex. Alternatively, the term epilepsy encompasses a broad range clinical syndromes characterized by repeated seizures over time unprovoked by an acute systemic or neurological insult. “It’s the last thing you worry about before you go to bed; and the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning.” – Heather Jackson These definition’s however fail to capture the feelings of helplessness felt by parents, family members, and caregivers when they watch a loved one endure the experience of a having a seizure – especially when that loved one is a child. “It’s the last thing you worr...
