The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, (pictured above) is the best hospital for neurology and neurosurgery, according to the US News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings for 2014-2015 released today.
The Mayo Clinic claimed the top spot this year over Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, which topped last year’s annual ranking but fell to third place behind New York–Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, New York City.
Rankings are based largely on objective data on hospital performance, such as patient survival rates and resources like nurse staffing. Each hospital’s reputation, as determined by a survey of physician specialists, is also a factor.
US News made several changes to the Best Hospitals rankings methods this year, including placing a greater emphasis on patient safety. Patient safety metrics now account for 10% of each hospital’s overall score in most specialties — twice as much as in past years. The role of hospital reputation, determined through a national survey of medical specialists, diminished by 5 percentage points.
The neurology and neurosurgery category consists of 1358 hospitals. All are experienced in treating difficult cases — a hospital is listed only if at least 332 inpatients needing a high level of expertise in this specialty were treated there in 2010, 2011, and 2012. The report ranks the top 50 hospitals on the basis of score.

“Nearly 2 million hospital patients every year face surgery or care that poses technical challenges or an increased risk of death or harm because of age, physical condition or infirmities. The rankings provide a tool to help such patients find unusually skilled inpatient care,” a statement from US News & World Report notes.
